Etymology

From *Hagmatāna- from *Ham-gmata-ana- (literally “city of the gathered”), itself derived from *ham-gmata-, participle of *ha(m)-gam- (“coming together”), from *ham- (literally “together”) + *gam- (“to come”) (cf. *gmata- (“past participle of *gam-”)), from Proto-Indo-European *sem- and *gʷem-.
