Borrowed from Old Median *Fravartiš, from Proto-Iranian *frawr̥Htíš, from *fra- (formost) +‎ *wr̥Htíš (choice, wish), from Proto-Indo-European *wélh₁-ti-s ~ *wl̥h₁-téy-s, from *welh₁- (to choose, want) +‎ *-tis. Cognate with Old Avestan 𐬟𐬭𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬴𐬌 (frauuaṣ̌i, guardian spirit).[1]
