[edit]Borrowed from Old Median *Fravartiš, from Proto-Iranian *frawr̥Htíš, from *fra- (“formost”) + *wr̥Htíš (“choice, wish”), from Proto-Indo-European *wélh₁-ti-s ~ *wl̥h₁-téy-s, from *welh₁- (“to choose, want”) + *-tis. Cognate with Old Avestan 𐬟𐬭𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬴𐬌 (frauuaṣ̌i, “guardian spirit”).[1]
