[edit]From a variant of Proto-Germanic *swehuraz, from Proto-Indo-European *swรฉแธฑuros. Cognate with Old English swฤor, Old High German swehur (German Schwรคher, German schwieger-), Middle Dutch swรชer, Old Swedish svรฆr (Swedish svรคr-). The Indo-European root is also the source of Latin socer, Ancient Greek แผฮบฯ ฯฯฯ (hekurรณs), Sanskrit เคถเฅเคตเคถเฅเคฐ (ลvรกลura), Old East Slavic ัะฒะตะบัั (svekrลญ) (Russian ัะฒัะบะพั (svjรณkor)), Albanian vjehรซrr, Lithuanian ลกeลกuras.
