Etymology

From a variant of Proto-Germanic *swehuraz, from Proto-Indo-European *swéḱuros. Cognate with Old English swēor, Old High German swehur (German Schwäher, German schwieger-), Middle Dutch swêer, Old Swedish svær (Swedish svär-). The Indo-European root is also the source of Latin socer, Ancient Greek ἑκυρός (hekurós), Sanskrit श्वशुर (śváśura), Old East Slavic свекръ (svekrŭ) (Russian свёкор (svjókor)), Albanian vjehërr, Lithuanian šešuras. Compare 𐍃𐍅𐌰𐌹𐌷𐍂𐍉 (swaihrō).
