Etymology

[edit]

Pokorny derives it from Proto-Indo-European *kot- (โ€œdwelling spaceโ€), comparing words such as Proto-Germanic *kutฤ… (โ€œshed, hut, stallโ€), Old Norse kytja (โ€œsmall cottageโ€), Ancient Greek ฮบฮฟฯ„ฯฮปฮท (kotรบlฤ“, โ€œcup, pintโ€); however, the relation and origin of all of these words is unclear. Also compare the cognates listed at Proto-Slavic *kotัŒcัŒ (โ€œcottage, paddockโ€).
