From 𐌲𐌰- (ga-) +‎ Proto-Germanic *reudaz (β€œred”). The semantic shift from the Proto-Germanic 'red' is explained as a shift first perhaps to 'beautiful' (compare Russian красный (krasnyj)) or to 'easily blushing'.
