Etymology

[edit]

From 𐌱𐌹- (bi-) +‎ *πŒΌπŒ°πŒΌπ€πŒΎπŒ°πŒ½ (*mampjan), from Proto-Germanic *mampjanΔ… (β€œto mock”), from the iterative *mump- (β€œto stain”), or otherwise from an unattested strong verb *mimpanΔ…. See English mump (β€œto cheat, deceive”), and compare obsolete Dutch mompen (β€œto deceive”).[1]

While Kroonen claims Ancient Greek μέμφομαι (mΓ©mphomai, β€œI blame, accuse”) and the Germanic forms are reconcilable, Beekes rejects this, stating that Germanic -p- cannot here correspond to Greek -Ο†- and that this etymological connection is not widely considered reliable.[2]
