From 𐌰𐍆- (af-, “off-”) +‎ *𐍃𐍄𐌰𐍃𐍃 (*stass, “[act of] standing”) or from 𐌰𐍆𐍃𐍄𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌰𐌽 (afstandan) +‎ -𐌸𐍃 (-þs); thus literally, "[act of] standing apart", in its attested uses in the Gothic Bible specifically a separation from an earlier state of affairs. Renders Koine Greek ἀποστασία (apostasía) and ἀποστάσιον (apostásion), of which it may be at least a partial calque or semantic loan.
