[edit]Etymology
[edit]From ๐ฐ๐- (af-, โoff-โ) + *๐๐๐ฐ๐๐ (*stass, โ[act of] standingโ) or from ๐ฐ๐๐๐๐ฐ๐ฝ๐ณ๐ฐ๐ฝ (afstandan) + -๐ธ๐ (-รพs); thus literally, "[act of] standing apart", in its attested uses in the Gothic Bible specifically a separation from an earlier state of affairs. Renders Koine Greek แผฯฮฟฯฯฮฑฯฮฏฮฑ (apostasรญa) and แผฯฮฟฯฯฮฌฯฮนฮฟฮฝ (apostรกsion), of which it may be at least a partial calque or semantic loan.
