흐르 (heureu-, to flow) + (-i-, causative suffix) + (-da, suffix conventionally given for citation forms).

First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 흘리〮다〮 (Yale: hùllí-tá).
