Etymology

Of native Korean origin. From Middle Korean 한쇼 (Yale: hansyo), (ha-, big; great) +‎ (-n) +‎ (swo, bull, cow). However, later contaminated by 황(黃) (hwang, yellow) +‎ (so, bull, cow). For a similar change, see 황새 (hwangsae, stork).
