[edit]Of native Korean origin. From Middle Korean 한쇼 (Yale: hansyo), 하 (ha-, “big; great”) + ㄴ (-n) + 소 (swo, “bull, cow”). However, later contaminated by 황(黃) (hwang, “yellow”) + 소 (so, “bull, cow”). For a similar change, see 황새 (hwangsae, “stork”).
