[edit]First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean ᄒᆡ〮도디〮 (Yale: hóy-twòtí), equivalent to 해 (hae, “sun”) + 돋 (dot, “to rise”) + 이 (-i, noun-deriving suffix).
