Sino-Korean word from 函數 (function), with compound/genitive tensing applied, itself first used in print in 1859 in Li Shanlan's Chinese translation of Elias Loomis's Elements of Analytical Geometry and of the Differential and Integral Calculus.

    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
