Etymology

[edit]

Univerbation of *해 (*hay-) +‎ (-a, infinitive suffix) +‎ ᄒᆞ다 (hota, to be, light verb deriving adjectives). The first component is clearly related to ᄒᆡ〮다〮 (hóytá, to be white), but the vowel mismatch is difficult to explain.
