First attested in the Bullyu dugongbu si eonhae (分類杜工部詩諺解 / 분류두공부시언해), 1481, as Middle Korean 딮다 (Yale: tiphta).

  1. To rely, rest (on a cane, stick, etc.)
    짚고 헤엄치기
    ttang jipgo heeomchigi
    as easy or safe as swimming (with the arms) resting on the ground
  2. To dip (a dipstick to stand on the bottom)

  1. (Gangwon, Seoul, Gyeongsang, Jeolla dialect, Chungcheong, Hamgyong, Russia) Dialectal form of 깊다 (gipda, to be deep, profound).
    • 2015 May 3, 이종호 [ijongho], “6개월 된 송아지를 잡아먹은 메기 [6gaewol doen song'ajireul jabameogeun megi]”, in 한국구비문학대계 [han'gukgubimunhakdaegye]‎[1], 강원도 양구군 방산면 [gang'wondo yanggugun bangsanmyeon]:

      Geunde geugeo (ppuri) hana-ga da (yeonmot) deureoganda-go geuraess-eunikka jipjo.
