[edit]First attested in the Iryun haengsildo (二倫行實圖 / 이륜행실도), 1518 (Oksan Seowon ed.), as Middle Korean 짓아비 (Yale: cisapi), originally equivalent to 집 (Yale: cìp, “house”) + ㅅ (Yale: -s-, “genitive morpheme”) + 아비〮 (Yale: àpí, “father”): "father of the house" > "pater familias, husband".
