Etymology

[edit]

First attested in the Sinjeung yuhap (新增類合 / 신증유합), 1576, as Middle Korean 댱마 (Yale: tyangma), a compound of () (tyang, long, lengthy, a Sino-Korean morpheme) +‎ (mah, monsoon season).[1] The Sino-Korean element may have been added for disambiguation.

The Middle Korean (Yale: mah, “monsoon season”) does not survive in modern Korean, but is still found as the first element of 마파람 (maparam, south wind).
