[edit]This is one of a number of Korean words that seem to derive from an ancient root *it meaning "two", which was lost by Middle Korean times. See also 이틀 (iteul, “two days”), 이듬해 (ideumhae, “next year”), 이듭 (ideup, “two years of age”).
