Etymology

First attested in the Yeogeo yuhae (譯語類解 / 역어유해), 1690, as Early Modern Korean 어웍새 (Yale: eweksay). From earlier *어ᄫᅥᆨ (*eWek) +‎ 새〯 (sǎy, grass); compare Yukjin dialect 어벅새 (eobeoksáe, Id.).
