First attested in the Bullyu dugongbu si eonhae (分類杜工部詩諺解 / 분류두공부시언해), 1481, as Middle Korean 어ᅀᅳ름 (Yale: èzùlùm).

Also attested in the Hunmong jahoe (訓蒙字會 / 훈몽자회), 1527, as Middle Korean 어ᅀᆞ름 (Yale: èzòlùm).

Probably a substantive form of an unattested adjective. Related to Korean 어슬하다 (eoseulhada), 어스레하다 (eoseurehada) and Jeju 어스름 (eoseureum), 어스럼 (eoseureom).
