[edit]From Proto-Koreanic *anok (“inside”), cognate to Middle Korean 않〮 (ánh, “inside”), modern 안 (an, “inside”). Korean traditionally makes a strong association between women and the inside quarters: see also 계집 (gyejip, “woman”), 집사람 (jipsaram, “wife”), 안사람 (ansaram, “wife”).
Probably a borrowing by Standard Korean from a dialectal form that lacked lenition of final */-k/; cf. Gyeongsang dialect 뜨락 (tteurak) for 뜰 (tteul), Middle Korean ᄠᅳᆶ (Yale: ptùlh).
