[edit]First attested in the Gukhan hoehwa (國韓會話 / 국한회화), 1895, as Early Modern Korean 썰물.
Probably from an unattested Middle Korean word *ᅘᅧᆯ〮믈〮 (*hhyélmúl, “low tide”, literally “pulling water”) which pairs with Middle Korean 밀〯믈〮 (mǐlmúl, “high tide”, literally “pushing water”), from ᅘᅧ〮 (hhyé-, “to pull”) + ㄹ (-l, adnominal suffix) + 믈〮 (múl, “water”).
