First attested in the Yongbi eocheon'ga (龍飛御天歌 / 용비어천가), 1447, as Middle Korean 새〯별〯 (Yale: sǎy pyěl).

Analyzable as (sae, east) +‎ (-s-, genitive interfix) +‎ (byeol, star).
