Etymology 1

(sal-, to live) + (-ri-, causative suffix) + (-da, suffix conventionally given for citation forms).

First attested in the eighteenth century as a newly derived causative form of 살다 (salda, to live), displacing the Middle Korean causative verbs 살이〮다〮 (Yale: sàlGí-tá, “to cause to reside at a place”) and 사ᄅᆞ다〮 (Yale: sàlò-tá, “to bring to life; to rescue”).
