Etymology

First attested in the Bak Tongsa eonhae (朴通事諺解 / 박통사언해), 1677, as Early Modern Korean 비듬 (Yale: pitum). Possibly from 빗 (bit-, “to comb”) +‎ ㅁ (-m, nominalisation suffix). Compare also 빗 (bit, “comb”), 비늘 (bineul, “scale”).
