Korean

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 비〯ᄫᅡᇀ다〮 (Yale: pǐWàth-tá). Also attested in the Neung'eomgyeong eonhae (楞嚴經諺解 / 능엄경언해), 1461, as Middle Korean 비〯왙다〮 (Yale: pǐwàth-tá).

Seemingly a compound of some Middle Korean prefix 비〯— (pǐ-) and 밭다〮 (pàthtá). Compare 비웃다 (biutda), descended from Middle Korean 비〯우ᇫ〯다〮 (pǐwǔztá).

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈpɛ(ː)t̚t͈a̠] ~ [ˈpe̞(ː)t̚t͈a̠]
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)/(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
