Etymology

Of native Korean origin. 문드리다 (mundeurida, to drop) +‎ 지다 (jida, passive-marking suffix).

문드리다 (mundeurida) is not attested independently in mainland Korean sources, and now survives only in Jeju and in this derived verb.

Verb

문드러지다 (mundeureojida) (infinitive 문드러져 or 문드러지어, sequential 문드러지니)

  1. to fester and drop off (especially of flesh)
    나병이 걸리면 온 몸에 살이 문드러진대.
    nabyeong'i geollimyeon on mome sari mundeureojindae.
    They say that if you get leprosy, your flesh rots and falls off all over your body.
  2. (figurative) to be outrageous; to be emotionally intolerable (usually with (sok, “insides”) as a subject)
    가해자는 잘 살고 피해자는 평생 고통 받는 모습을 보면 속이 문드러진다.
    gahaejaneun jal salgo pihaejaneun pyeongsaeng gotong banneun moseubeul bomyeon sogi mundeureojinda.
    When I see the perpetrators live well off and the victims be in pain for their entire lives, I find that outrageous [lit. "my insides rot and drop off"].
