[edit]무당 (mudang, “shaman”) + 벌레 (beolle, “bug”), conventionally thought to be after its red coloring reminiscent of a shaman's ritual robes but perhaps also because of its privileged position in Korean shamanism. See also 무당개구리 (mudanggaeguri).

- Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
