Etymology

[edit]

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 나다〮나다〮 (Yale: nàt-á nà-tá). Equivalent to 낟다〮 (Yale: nàt-tá, “to emerge, to appear”) + 나다〮 (Yale: nà-tá, “to exit”). As the former verb is now obsolete, the word has become monomorphemic.
