Etymology

Originally from 공번 (gongbeon, root) +‎ 되다 (-doeda, to become, light verb deriving adjectives), this particular choice of light verb being first uncontroversially attested in the eighteenth century. The South Korean form has been hypercorrected; see 공변 (gongbyeon) for more.
