[edit]From Middle Korean *가ᄫᆞᆯ (*kaWol), from Old Korean *kapol or perhaps *kapul.
First attested in Hangul form only in the seventeenth century, but regularly indirectly attested since the eighth century in Chinese-language texts produced in Korea in the phonogramic form 加火魚 / 加火鱼 (jiāhuǒyú).
