[edit]Inherited from Old Javanese saruṅ (“sarong”), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *saruŋ (“sheath, sheath-like container; to sheathe a weapon”). Cognate with Sundanese ᮞᮛᮥᮀ (sarung).
