Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *likud (back).

  • Usage for numbering after twenty hypothetically comes from the total number of fingers in the human body, so the meaning of "back" means "return to the start of the count".
    • The oldest written usage of this word recorded on Old Javanese text Kakawin Brahmandapurana chapter 174:14 which used pitu likur for 27 (twenty seven).
