- from Old Javanese wutuh (“whole, intact”).
- from Old Javanese butuh (“in trouble, in difficulties, embarrassed”) (compare to Javanese ꦲꦸꦛꦸꦃ (uthuh, “to persist; shameless, brazen, to have a nerve”), Old Javanese tutuh (“blame, reproof, reprimand, reproach”)).
- from Old Javanese botoh (“to bet, wager; gambler”), toh (“stake”).
