From Magadhi Prakrit 𑀕𑀁𑀕𑀸 (gaṃgā), from Sanskrit गङ्गा (gáṅgā, “the Ganga”). Cognate with Assamese গাং (gaṅ), Bengali গাং (gaṅ), Chakma 𑄉𑄧𑄋 (gaṅā).
