Translingual

Symbol

[edit]

  1. (Africanist notation) upstep; equivalent to IPA .
  2. (IPA, rare, superscript only) superscript extIPA ⟨¡⟩ for a weak, fleeting or epenthetic sublaminal percussive.

Usage notes

[edit]

The low ⟨ꜟ⟩ may be used for greater visual distinction from the IPA stress mark ⟨ˈ⟩, or when superscript i is used for diphthongs (e.g. ⟨aⁱ⟩, ⟨oⁱ⟩). These can be especially confused in a sans-serif font. However, in some fonts low ⟨ꜟ⟩ is only slightly lower than raised ⟨ꜞ⟩, rather than subscript, and so may be less distinct from those other characters.
