Inherited from Proto-Slavic *zǫ̑bъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *źámbas, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵómbʰos (tooth). First attested in c. 1140‒1160. Cognate with Old East Slavic зѫбъ (zǫbŭ), Old Ruthenian зубъ (zub), Old Church Slavonic зѫбъ (zǫbŭ), Old Polish ząb.
