Etymology
[edit]Literally "demon gate". Derives from Chinese texts and the belief system of 陰陽道 (Onmyōdō), wherein the northeast is considered to be the direction in which negative energy concentrates and demons come and go.[1][2][3][4][5]
First cited in Japanese to the early 1200s.[1]
