Pronunciation

Reconstructed as *-ms, both because 音 and 叱 are well-attested Old Korean phonograms for *m and *s respectively and because of the Middle Korean reflex.

音叱 (*-ms)

necessity-marking suffix attached to a verb stem, equivalent to English "it is fitting that..."
- 765, 忠談師 (Chungdamsa), “安民歌 (Anmin-ga)”, in 三國遺事 (Samguk Yusa) [Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms]:
  國惡太平恨音叱如
  *NALak THAYPHYENG-ho-ms-ta
  It is fitting that the country will be greatly peaceful.
- c. 1170, Interpretive gugyeol glosses to the Avatamsaka Sutra, vol. 35:
  衆生天人^衣[之] 歎仰^爲尸所^利尸 [爲]^舍乙 ^爲音[應]^叱爲飛立
  It is fitting that the sentient beings become ones admired by the heavenly ones.
