Etymology

From (ぐん) (gun, military) + () (te, hand). Short for 軍用(ぐんよう)手袋(てぶくろ) (gun'yō tebukuro, literally gloves for military use)[1][2] or 軍隊(ぐんたい)手袋(てぶくろ) (guntai tebukuro, literally military gloves),[3] due to pioneering usage by the Japanese navy.
