[edit]Unclear. Either from Middle Chinese 蹴球 (MC tshjuwk gjuw, literally “kick + ball”), or a coinage in Japan of Middle Chinese-derived elements as a compound of 蹴 (shū, “kick”) + 球 (kyū, “ball”).
