Etymology
[edit]As Nihonshōki states, ホムタ was a synonym to 鞆, a special leather bracelet worn by archers. No Japanese etymology was found to this word (誉 and 田 are ateji). Alexander Vovin proposed a Koreanic etymology of this word which in Modern Korean would've given a word like *팔무닥, from 팔, 묻다 and a noun-forming -악 suffix found, for example, in words like 가락, with a matching literal meaning of "arm-coverer".
