From Old Japanese.

Possibly cognate with classical verb 燃ゆ (moyu), modern 燃える (moeru, “to burn; get fired up; light ablaze”).

     haru wa moe natsu wa midori ni kurenai no madara ni miyuru aki no yama ka mo

     In spring, budding; in summer, green; and in autumn, the mountain is specked with crimson colors.
