Etymology
[edit]A corruption of 份兒/份儿 (fènr), via association with 範/范 (fàn, “example, model”). The latter was originally a Peking opera jargon, meaning “the skills and tricks that a Peking opera singer has to know in order to deliver a good performance on stage” (e.g. 起範兒/起范儿); also a Beijing colloquialism, meaning “stylish; looking impressive; fantastic”. The spread to MSC occurred in the 1990s-2000s.
