Etymology
[edit]Renamed from 赤寮 (ciah4 liao5) during the Qing era after irrigation was introduced.[1]
Teochew linguist Lin Lunlun 林倫倫 writes instead that the original name was 粟寮 (ciah4 liao5, literally “grain hut”), also written as 赤寮 (ciah4 liao5), and that 穀饒/谷饶 (gog4 riao5, literally “grain + plentiful”) is a roughly synonymous + homophonous modification of the original name.[2]
