Etymology

[edit]

Compound of (suna, sand) +‎ (chi, ground; soil).[1][2][3][4][5] The chi changes to ji as an instance of rendaku (連濁).

Also found with the non-rendaku pronunciation sunachi, with some references indicating that this is an alternative.[1][2][3] Other references do not include this pronunciation at all.[4][5][6]

First cited to 1595 in a Latin-Portuguese-Japanese dictionary.[1]
