Etymology
[edit]Originally a compound of 真 (ma, “true”) + 魚 (na, “fish; side dish”), from the way that edible fish was often used as the main side dish at meals. The na element was variously spelled 菜 (literally “vegetables”), 魚 (literally “fish”), and 肴 (literally “side dish”) depending on context.[1][2]
