畫圖 (kyūjitai) |
From Middle Chinese 畫圖 (MC hweaH|hweak du, literally “write, draw + diagram, picture”). The shift in pronunciation for the second character, from earlier goon /zu/ to later kan'on /to/, may have been influenced by, or based on a reborrowing from, a later development in Chinese. Compare modern Mandarin reading huàtú, Min Nan ōa-tô͘.
Pronunciation
