Etymology

(shō, char) +‎ (bi, eyebrow). Literally, burning eyebrows. Originally a metaphor for urgency.

Compare Chinese 燃眉之急 (ránméizhījí, extreme urgency) and 焦急 (jiāojí, anxious, worried).
