- (literally) to wash the ground; to clean the floor. Emerged after the 1894 Hong Kong plague. See also 洗太平地.
- (neologism, derogatory, figuratively) to justify and defend someone's wrongdoing; to whitewash. From the line of Stephen Chow movie Kung Fu Hustle "警察出來洗地啦", in which a gang member asking alleged-police to clean the site after a bloody fighting.
- (military, informal) to perform an area bombing; to bomb a large area indiscriminately; to carpet bomb
