[edit]Ideogrammic compound (會意 / 会意): 气 (“gas”) + 川 (“three”). Also a phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声), where 川 (chuān) acts as the phonetic component. Compare 氕 (“protium”) and 氘 (“deuterium”).
