Etymology
[edit]Compound of 欄 (ran, “railing; column”, in reference to the vertical railings or columns of screens used in early transoms) + 間 (ma, “space, gap”).[1][2][3][4]
First attested from 1563.[2]

[edit]- [from 1563] a decorative wood carving or screen in the transom or lintel above a doorway in Japanese architecture (note that the use of sliding panel doors may mean that the transom is essentially as long as the wall)
